Creating Space for Communication, Healing & Growth

Meet the therapist

Meet Jessica Brym SLP - CCC

Speech-Language Pathologist

Hello! My name is Jessica and I am a California state and ASHA-certified Speech-Language Pathologist residing in the Sierra Nevada foothills. I graduated from San Jose State University in 2020 with a Master's degree in speech-language pathology. I primarily treat older adults with disorders of communication, cognition, and swallowing with a special focus in treating persons with Aphasia. I also treat adolescents and young adults with communication, language, and social pragmatic disabilities with a special focus in providing realistic and accessible relationship skills for communicating with family, friends, and romantic partners.

My approach to therapy is to help transfer skills learned in safe spaces into access to preferred activities and the wider community. I am passionate about providing services that decrease rates of depression and social isolation and increase quality of life and participation. Therapy does not have to be scary, boring, or impersonal. I believe the most effective treatments mirror the life we wish to live. For me, that is a life filled with music, art, comedy, community, and movement.

I utilize an evidence-based approach to treatment which includes integrated discourse treatment for persons with aphasia and conversational coaching for family members and caregivers. I utilize semantic feature analysis to expand vocabulary and increase turn taking with adolescents and young adults with communication and language-based challenges. For older adults with swallowing disorders, I utilize a combination of approaches based on the individual needs of the patient. These may include some or all of the following: swallowing exercises, sensory based treatments, environmental modifications, postural adjustments, caregiver training for pacing and feeding.

In my free time, I love to learn about soil health and restorative agriculture by helping to grow olives in my family's orchard in the Sierra foothills. I also enjoy playing music, singing songs, making art, and adventuring outdoors whenever possible. I am excited to share my passion for therapy and connection with you and your family!
